There have been many reports in the media of the singing, praying and praising God going on in the city of Port au Prince since the earthquake. People praising God in times of tragedy. One of the things we have learned about our Haitian friends since we moved here is how thankful they are to God for what little they do have. They rely on Him for everything and now, for their very lives. We have heard many stories of miracles from our staff. People who should not be alive right now, buildings that should have collapsed but are still standing. We at Mission of Hope believe God placed His angels all around our compound on Tuesday because all of our buildings are still standing and there was no structural damage to any of them. We have much to be thankful for today.
Yet, it's still hard to be thankful when you know so many are suffering. Can you imagine not knowing where your daughter was for 4 days? Our hospital administrator, Dr. Alix experienced that this past week. After the earthquake, he, his wife and their infant son got out of their house in time but he could not find his 4 year old daughter. For 4 days he searched before he found her in the care of a neighbour. She was suffering from a broken leg. Yes, the suffering is unimaginable and there is more to come. So many have no shelter, no food or water. Many are injured and can't get medical treatment. The hospitals that are open are severely over-crowded and many injured people wait outside, laying on the ground, suffering and not knowing when or if they will get treatment in time.
We are thankful to have found a safe, secure place in the city to set up our mobile clinics. Quisqueya Chapel is in the heart of Port au Prince. It sustained no damage whatsoever in the quake. It is a walled compound with security and is the perfect place for our medical teams to set up. Yesterday (Saturday) we held the first such clinic and had a steady stream of patients throughout the day. So many cuts and broken bones and to think these people had already been suffering for 4 days with no treatment whatsoever. Antibiotics will be essential for these people and the ones treated in the coming days.
We are excited about all the people who have volunteered to come help. We have a team from home coming hopefully on Tuesday. FTC Canada has mobilized this team of 2 doctors, 10 paramedics, a pastor and FTC Canada's president (aka my dad). They are travelling with some much-needed medications and supplies and hopefully a few boxes of Kraft Dinner that my kids have asked for. Yes, they are concerned that the "American" grocery store where we shop has collapsed and all of their "comfort foods from home" will be hard to find in the coming months.
Thank you to all who have sent your best wishes and are praying for us. Also for those who have pledged to help financially in this crisis. God is surely providing for Haiti's needs right now. Please continue to pray as these medical teams come in the next few months that we will be able to make a difference in peoples lives. Heal the wounded and suffering and give them Hope.
